Living Ancestors
Celebrating the Wisdom of Women Religious Across Africa
The Living Ancestor Project is a pan-African storytelling initiative that honors the profound contributions of Catholic Sisters who have dedicated 30 years or more to religious life. At its heart, the project is a sacred space for reflection, a place where the personal and communal
journeys of women religious are documented, celebrated, and shared.
Rooted in deep respect for the lived experiences of Sisters across the continent, the project uplifts the voices of women from every country in Africa, from all congregations, and in any language. Recognizing the linguistic and cultural richness of African religious life, all contributions are transcribed and translated as needed, ensuring each story is preserved and accessible to a wider
audience.
Why “Living Ancestors”?
In many African traditions, ancestors are not only honored for their years but revered for the wisdom they offer future generations. The Living Ancestor Project embraces this perspective
recognizing Sisters with decades of service as “living ancestors”: women whose enduring faith, commitment, and insight are a guiding light to others.
Their stories reflect a tapestry of life experiences, filled with faith, struggle, growth, leadership, and transformation. Each account offers a window into the evolution of religious life, as seen through the eyes of those who have shaped and sustained it. Through theologically reflective essays, these women articulate the meaning of their vows, their spirituality and charism, their ministerial impact, and their hopes for the future of religious life.
This archive is not just historical, it is alive, relevant, and deeply needed in our time. By gathering these voices, the Living Ancestors Project preserves an invaluable legacy while also inspiring the next generation of women discerning religious life. It is a witness to the enduring strength and relevance of African women religious in shaping faith, justice, and community across the continent and beyond.
